Positives: Excellent service - the staff was fantastic. No complaints! The food arrived quickly, our waiter was awesome, not a problem at all with that. The beer selection was decent, too. The atmosphere was nice too - fun decorations. Negatives: Flavor. Our party ordered quite a few different items, and all of it was very 'blah'. The carnitas were completely flavorless - no spiciness to them at all. The combo plate with burritos and chimichangas - everything tasted the same. We had made reservations, so we got a table right away. If you have to wait, there is nowhere to wait except a tiny lobby which blocks the entrance of people trying to come in or leave. If we go back, we'll request extra spice or something in our food and then maybe my opinion would change.

Service good....food bad. My wife had tacos and said the ground beef tasted like it had no seasoning. My enchiladas were not good.

Pretty standard "Mexican" food. Not sure if that's authentic or not. Maybe classified as Tex-Mex? Anyway, they have tacos, burritos, fajitas, and lots of other concoctions made of the same ingredients. Service has always been pretty quick. Most servers are (I think) native Spanish speakers but they definitely speak enough English that they can take your order (it's Apple Valley). They have lunch combos and regular combos. Not the best "Mexican" food I've ever had but it's good. I think I might like El Toro better though. They're similar price-wise. If you have a Lightning Card you can get half off your second combo.

I love this restaurant. The food & the prices are good. It's a family restaurant, but it still has a full bar. This its not a sports bar so it isn't noisy. It's a nice place to eat good in generous amounts and have a good time with your family and friends.

This place was the best Mexican food I've had so far in the Twin Cities, which isn't saying much.... I liked it well enough, but have had MUCH better. If this was any of the other places we have lived, it would maybe get a 3 star rating for just being "ok". The food is quite spicy. Luckily, I like spicy food. However, it was way too spicy for my 5 year old, even ordering from the Kid's Menu section. And my kid LOVES Mexican food. LOVES salsa. But was unable to eat much of her food. If you go here, leave the kids at home.

El Azteca is pretty close to home but not a place we go to very often. The parking lot is always full and there is generally a 10 minute wait to get a table which isn't too bad. The food is not very americanized - which is a good thing. The portions are always generous and it is impossible to leave the place hungry. The service was not so great, they are rather slow and many times I was unsure if they understood what I was asking.

I love this place. They make fresh guacamole at your table.

First time here and it was pretty good. I had the #12 combo (enchilada, burrito and quesadilla) and it was a lot of food for a good value. Pretty tasty as well. Great service! I was a little bummed that the combo didn't come with rice and beans (it's a la carte) but the chips, salsa and other dipping sauce was good. The food came out incredibly quickly! I still prefer a Mexican restaurant closer to where I live but this was good and I'd go back!

Wow this place is terrible. I live in the area and wanted to have a nice lunch with my boyfriend. We had terrible service. Our waitress neglected us and left us with no chips and cold queso. Then she had the decency to charge us for it. I of course did not tip her. This place is slow, below average food, and terrible service. Take it from a local...choose elsewhere.

The good: Our food came out fast. It was very hot and appeared fresh. We bought the guacamole made at your table, delicious!!! ($6.99) The atmosphere is pleasant. Our meals were all very tasty. Not so good: Our waiter spoke very little English. He messed up our child's order. Then proceeded to argue with us about it. (We offered to pay for the messed up meal)He finally went to fix it , but it took at least 15 minutes for them to make a cheese quesadilla . We had ordered a to go meal when we ordered our main food, we waited probably 20 minutes after we were done for it to arrive. The waiter was very scarce and we only got asked once if we needed anything.

Swung in on a Sunday evening. Not too busy. Chips and salsa were very good, bit of heat but good. Servers were polite and quick, could be a little more outgoing though. Fajitas and chimichangas were excellent! Came out very quickly. Happy hour margaritas was tasty!

The food was great but we didn't have enough flour tortillas to finish off the fajitas for two. But the food will definitely make me come back for more.

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in the south metro area. I think they have the best chili rellenos, and love the burrito San Jose. Excellent service, great salsa and white dip.We usually eat here in the evenings and are always seated immediately, and the food is served very quickly. I have eaten here a few times per month for the past couple of years, and have brought many guests here. It's a big hit every single time.

Worst experience EVER! Not only did our waiter neglect us, he took our order wrong! He left us with no chips or refills and never came back to check on us except to bring the food and the bill. Him taking our order wrong wouldn't have been an issue, if he hadn't come back out and insisted that it was OUR fault! (What happened to the costumer is always right??) He insisted that we ordered a completely different meal and only offered to get us our right food after he argued with another waitress in Spanish regarding the issue. We then accepted the food due to the fact we had already waited for over 20 minutes and ate the wrong meal. When we received our check, we were charged full price for our horrible meal. Needless to say, the waiter did not receive a tip, we will never be recommending this restaurant, and we will never be returning.

This is a one visit review . . . was up in MN on vacation . . . I've lived in Arizona for 10 years where good Mexican food is a dime a dozen, and I'd put El Azteca up with some of the better ones. The food was above par, the place was nice inside, clean bathrooms, and the service was excellent. Chips were refilled, and the server split the check among five of us without batting an eye. I didn't have any of the desert, so he even split that among just the other four which was outstanding Was there with four of the whitest guys you'll meet, and they all rave about El Azteca. I'd have to try more of the menu to rave, but the combination I had was very good. There's a queso sauce appetizer that they were drooling over, and they loved the fried ice cream There are so many places I want to try when I visit MN that I'd be hardpressed to go back, but if that was the call for the night, I'd certainly go happily

I used to really like this place, then had a bad experience and hadn't been back in awhile. I ate here recently and was pleasantly surprised by how good the food was! I ordered the burrito chullin and my mother had the flautas. Both were very good. I had a very similar dish at another Mexican restaurant in Apple Valley and the one I had at El Azteca was far superior. I ordered a sangria and although it was tasty, I thought it was strange it didn't contain any fruit or ice. When the waiter put it in front of my I thought he had brought me a glass of wine. It tasted great though and I was pleasantly surprised by how inexpensive it was. The chips and salsa aren't that great, but you can order cheese sauce to make up for it. A lot of people seem to like the white sauce they bring out with the salsa, but it's not for me. It's like dipping chips in salad dressing.

I'll start off by saying my standards for Mexican food are quite high. Having a mom who was born and raised in Mexico, I'm always on the hunt for authentic, quality Mexican food. And I'll just get straight to the point, El Azteca is not that at all. However, I will mention that I have a few friends who seem to love this place but I still have yet to figure out why... The food is bland, and if you order any of the combos don't be expecting much as your entire plate will all taste like the same thing. If you do get forced to go, enjoy a Margarita and some fresh guacamole. Those are the only two things I can semi enjoy since they make their ritas strong and their guacamole fresh at the table. The service is usually pretty good, but I would definitely choose other Mexican-style restaurants over this one.

This is one of our favorites. We have ordered many things on the menu. Favorites include: lobster enchiladas - great cheese sauce vegetarian enchiladas - one each of refried beans, mashed potatoes and cheese covered with cheese sauce One note of warning ... the chile rellenos used to be excellent and they have really been awful the last two times we were there. They are now over-breaded and greasy. If they wouldn't have been so awful twice, I would have given them 4 stars.

The food was ok, our server was less than interested in us being there. We were missing our silverware when our food arrived, asked for it and it was a ten minute wait. We order apps and our table that arrived after us and ordered after us got their apps first and we just ordered guacamole.

Get the burrito San Jose. Very good. Also the ranchy sauce with the chips is very good. Good place to get some Mexican if you are in the area but I wouldn't go out of your way.

I've been eating here for many years. The food is always hot, fresh and delicious. This is the best Mexican food in the Apple Valley/Lakeville area. The service is also very fast and excellent. The freshly made salsa has just enough kick in it. I recommend the enchiladas plabamos, the fajitas for two/three, and the freshly made guacamole. ALL of those are AWESOME!

Our waiter barely spoke English. Food wasn't anything special - it was bland as can be. My Carne Esada came with some lettuce and a dab pico da gio (however it's spelled), when I asked for some more since it was the only source of flavor on my plate, he said that it was an extra $2. WTF???

My husband and I used to often eat here, I loved the spicy ranch dip served with their chips, and not very many Mexican restaurants serve that. I also liked their rice. Well, we had a coupon for "spend $25, get $5 off bill". There was no fine print or exclusions printed on the coupon. When I presented the coupon to our server (who barely spoke English and was hardly gregarious, nor available when we needed a refill, etc.) he looked aggreived and said we couldnt use it, since sodas didn't count toward the $25 minimum bill. Again, the coupon had no exclusions on it. He was in a hurry to grab our bill and go run my card, but I yelled after him and handed him the other coupon I had (buy one meal, get one half off). I could tell by the look on his face he didn't want to take it, but had to. It was awkward how annoyed he seemed. I should have asked for a manager, and complained, but we decided it wasn't worth the bother. We haven't been back since.

Had just moved from st.louis and went here for some Mexican food. Should of went to taco johns I guess. First off they didn't seem to understand coke does not mean diet coke because they kept giving us diet coke even though we kept asking for coke. Second they will not give you a scoop of guacamole with your entrée if it doesn't come with it, why I have no idea. They just said to my wife no guacamole for you. I had some on my plate so she just used that. then you actually taste the food and eh completely forgettable, I got the chicken enchiladas and hey someone forgot to put any seasoning on the chicken, plus it was dry so whoopee. People seem to like this place I have no idea why perhaps they have super duper margaritas or something.

My family and I have been visiting this restuarant since it has opened. I would say we are way above average Mexican food enthusiasts and this Mexican restuarant is the best especially south of the river. The proportions keep us coming back and their pico de gallo is heaven on earth. While the food isn't straight from a Mexican mother's kitchen, I believe most everything on the menu is prepared to order. Love the employees here too!

Terrible food. Very bad service. How do you not get cheese with fajitas? Didn't like this place previously and still don't.

This is a go to place for Mexican American food south of the river. My favorite item is the fresh guacamole. Nice touch. Service has always been good, servers are pleasant and attentive. No real complaints. Food is average Mex-American food which I think is the norm around here. Haven't really found a great Mexican joint yet.

I used to love this restaurant. It was the go-to place for Mexican south of the river. Then something happened. They upgraded the interior and downgraded their attitude. Lunch prices are decent, but rather small portions. Seriously, an extra scoop of beans can fill ya up and cost ya next to nuthin! Dinner portions are generous, but prices reflect whatever they paid on their interior upgrades a few years ago. Servers are aloof to rude. I had a terrible experience my last time there. The server told my friend that she didn't order what we ALL heard her order. He argued with her for a while and then finally said he'd reorder it. We all know it doesn't take long to fire a dish at a Mexican restaurant since so much of it is prepared ahead of time. The rest of the table was done before she got her food and not until I asked about it again. I am not an in-your-face person, so I don't know why the attitude.

We used to eat here often as it is close to our house. It was never a great place to eat just convenient. We are located in a food wasteland out here in suburbia. Tonight we revisited the place and attempted to use one of the Dining Club cards that we had purchased last fall. After showing the waiter the card when we sat down, ordering the two required drinks and our meals we were told when we were finished eating that we couldn't use the card. The waiter said his manager said they couldn't be used during happy hour. I have no idea what hours or days are for happy hour but there were no such restrictions listed on the card. The so called manager refused to honor the card as well. He said they take no coupons during happy hour. We sat in an area with lots of families and their screaming kids and this was no happy hour scene. Since the food is mediocre at best and the owner/management is of such a shady nature, I will never set foot into this place again. Let the gringos have it.

All these south of the river Mexican restaurants are very similar... El Loro, El Toro, etc. El Azteca does stand out a bit for a few reasons. One, Rudy (or Rudolfo). He was an awesome server in bar area! Started my night off right was a decent margarita on the rocks while we waited for our table. Our next server didn't have quite the same personality, but was quick. They have the best salsa verde there - caliente! Tread slowly, even if you are a heat-seeker! Chips were crisp and refilled upon request. The beef is actually better than the other Mexican restaurants. The chicken was moist, but wasn't shredded so I wouldn't say the same. The deep fried cheesecake rolls are very tasty, but extremely rich. I'd share those and skip the fried ice cream.

We used to live by El Azteca and went often. The food was always great and inexpensive. Tonight was different....When we walked in tonight the host had no idea how long of a wait it would be. At one point he asked a customer how long they had been standing there and then quoted THAT time to the person who just came in to see what the wait time was..strange. We paid 50.00 for two entrees, two beers, one kids meal and guacamole. You can't find drink prices anywhere so be sure to ask or verify prices. Tonight, we got charged 6.99 for guacamole when the menu said 3.75 and I asked if my son (he's 7) could have a kids meal with just hard shell chicken tacos. So instead of giving him a kids meal they charged us 2.50 for a small soda and 6.50 for his tacos...WOW...believe me those tacos weren't that special. The beers were 11 and we didn't even have any leftovers....We won't bother to go back. It's not the greatest service and if there is an issue there isn't anyone to talk to about it.

Best mexican I have had in the Rosemount, Apple Valley area. Their burrito San Jose is very good and my fiance loves the burritos fajitas.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
